Procrastination...
We all do it. I am the best at it. Sometimes it’s innocent—scrolling Instagram instead of tackling that pile of laundry. Other times, it feels like a full-on mental block that stops us from doing the things we know we should be doing. But over the years, I’ve found a few tricks that help me get moving when I've let my procrastination spiral out of control.
Here are my favorite simple, real-life ways to stop procrastinating and actually get things done.
1. The "Do It Now" Rule
If something takes less than two minutes, just do it. Right now. No overthinking—you’ll thank yourself later. This rule works wonders for small tasks like responding to a text, putting the dishes in the dishwasher, or tossing the day’s laundry in the hamper. You’ll feel lighter with each one crossed off your mental list. Clearing these mini-tasks off my plate keeps them from piling up and feeling overwhelming later.
2. Write a List
Big tasks are the ultimate procrastination bait. They’re intimidating, and they scream, “You’re going to take forever.” Instead of trying to tackle everything at once, break the task into tiny, manageable steps. You’ll be amazed at how quickly small wins build up. For example, instead of trying to clean the entire playroom, I’ll start by picking up just the stuffed animals or organizing one shelf. Once I’ve tackled one small part, it’s easier to keep going.
3. Set a Timer
This is a great trick when you’re really dragging your feet. Set a timer for 10 minutes and tell yourself you only have to work on the dreaded task until the timer goes off. Nine times out of ten, I keep going once I’ve started. But even if I stop at 10 minutes, I’ve made progress, and that’s better than nothing.
4. Use Rewards (Yes, bribing yourself works!)
Sometimes, you need a little extra motivation. If you finish a task you’ve been avoiding, reward yourself with something small but satisfying—you’ve earned it.—like a piece of chocolate, a quick walk outside, or watching an episode of my favorite show. Knowing there’s a reward waiting makes even the most boring task a little more bearable.
It works with dogs and kids... moms deserve rewards too!
5. Change the Scene
A change of environment can work wonders. If you’re stuck, take your laptop to the kitchen, sit outside, or even just move to a different spot on the couch. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh perspective (and maybe a cup of coffee) to kickstart my productivity.
Sometimes Done is Better Than Perfect
This one’s for all my fellow perfectionists out there. Sometimes procrastination isn’t about being lazy; it’s about being afraid the result won’t be good enough—but you’ll never know until you try. Remind yourself that done is better than perfect. You’ll feel relieved once it’s behind you. The imperfect thing I finish is always better than the perfect thing I never start.
The hard truth is, procrastination doesn’t disappear—even with the best tricks. But what I’ve learned is that you don’t have to wait for motivation to strike. You can take small steps, use simple tools, and keep moving forward. And remember, progress (no matter how small) always beats staying stuck.
