Walking into your first Zumba class can feel intimidating. The music is unfamiliar, the instructor has high energy, and everyone around you seems to know the moves. It's easy to feel overwhelmed and be distracted by those around you.
I've been teaching Zumba for 8 years and have seen many people come and go. People love Zumba for so many reasons but so many times, I see insecurities keep people from coming back for a second class. You need to give it a second class. This is when you recognize a song, remember a move, and have a little more fun.
Overtime, I've offer the same tips to people when they are new to a class. I put together this guide to help you walk into your next Zumba class with more confidence.
Zumba for beginners
Let your guard down
Accept that you might stumble trying to get the steps right on your first class. You're here to let loose – laugh at yourself and keep going.
Start with your feet
If you feel yourself getting confused, start with your feet. Ignore the arms around you and find the rhythm at your own pace. As you find yourself catching onto the steps, start to incorporate your arms.
The moves will repeat
You will do the same set of moves during the different parts of a song. You will do one set of moves for the verse of a song, the bridge, and the chorus. When you hear the chorus coming, you can expect to do the same moves as the last time you heard the chorus.
This makes it easy for you to remember the moves the more familiar you become with the music. Here's an example.
Modify for your body
If you're having trouble keeping up or feeling unsure, change the moves to fit what feels good for you. Listen to your body and have fun! There's no judgment.
Go more than once
Zumba instructors play the same music week over week. The playlist may shuffle around but songs stick around long enough for you to learn it. The more familiar you are with the music, the easier it is to pick up on the moves.
Don't forget to smile
Don't be so serious. Laugh at yourself. A simple smile can change your entire perspective. We all make mistakes, no body is doing it perfect, and you're there to have fun.
